GH2 designed this elementary school for Broken Arrow Public Schools, due to rising enrollment and growing educational needs. With 91,000 square feet of space for pre-k through 5th grade students, the facility includes: 30 pod style classrooms, eight special use classrooms for art, music, and STEM; a full size gymnasium with stage, spectator seating, media center, multiple playgrounds, and the district's second FEMA tornado shelter for students.
The school has splashes of color at every turn, and the public spaces are carefully designed to be centralized, enhancing the sense of collaboration encouraged by the pod-style classrooms.
The size of the school additionally allows students from two other schools to be bussed in daily in order to take language courses from specialized staff - primarily English Language Learning. The school has fewer than 600 students, but has the capacity for up to 800.
With an overarching theme of “Learning to Grow”, special features of the school include a lobby with a custom-designed, wood, laminate tree; trees painted throughout the building, and to emphasize that reading is a top priority for students, the library is at the front of the building, highlighted by a curved wall of glazing.
